This Native American Heritage Month, we explore our cultural history in sound with Chickasaw Nation composer Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Chokfi’ (Rabbit), British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s wildly popular Song of Hiawatha Overture (based on the Longfellow poem), and the stirring tribute to resilience of Michael Daugherty’s “Trail of Tears” concerto for flute and orchestra featuring renowned African and Indigenous flutist Brice Smith. Combined with “adopted American” Czech composer Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony #8 and you’re in for an evening of thought provoking wonderment.
