LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6, “Pastoral”

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5
Join Music Director Elliot Moore for a historical deep dive on Ludwig van Beethoven as the LSO adds to our Beethoven Cycle with two of Ludwig van Beethoven’s most beloved Symphonies. The program begins with the “Pastoral” 6th Symphony, depicting scenes of nature and burned into consciousness for millions by its use in Disney’s Fantasia. Finishing the program is the towering 5th Symphony, whose widely known fateful first 4 note motive is practically part of our shared human DNA. Separating these two symphonies is a new work from superstar American composer Mason Bates, written during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, which draws upon the “Ode to Joy” theme from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and plays on the idea of humanity remaining connected while apart. This is a towering powerhouse program showcasing triumph over adversity and the orchestra as a vehicle of human cultural expression.
